How FastGig is changing the way Singapore Hires

Julian Tan our Founder and CEO of FastGig and FastJobs joins MoneyFM 89.3 to share how FastGig and FastJobs are helping companies stay agile in today’s rapidly evolving workforce landscape. From bridging talent gaps to empowering a new generation of independent workers, Julian explores how both brands are reimagining employment for both businesses and jobseekers.

Q: How would you describe the current state of Singapore’s gig economy?

Singapore’s gig economy has matured well beyond its early roots in ride-hailing and food delivery. Today, it's a fast-growing and evolving ecosystem. Over the past few years, we’ve seen strong demand emerge in sectors such as retail, logistics, F&B, and events — driven by businesses needing agile manpower solutions and individuals seeking flexible work options.

At FastGig, we’ve experienced this growth firsthand. In just the first half of this year, the number of new companies hiring via our platform has more than doubled. On the jobseeker side, we’ve seen a 30% year-on-year increase in new users. Many of these users are seeking greater autonomy, work-life balance, or a secondary income stream to support rising costs of living.

Q: What gig jobs are most in demand, and how has demand evolved?

Today, roles like grocery shoppers, e-commerce packers, event assistants, F&B crew, and retail associates are highly sought after—especially during peak shopping periods or festive seasons. Singapore companies  are increasingly turning to gig workers to scale their manpower quickly without the long-term commitment or overhead of full-time hires, to solve the urgent vacancy gap.

One great example is Decathlon, which has been using FastGig since 2023. During their high-demand periods, our platform helped them fill 75% of their staffing needs within a short time frame—ensuring smooth retail operations across multiple outlets nationwide.

Q: Gig workers often face challenges like job insecurity and inconsistent income. How is FastGig addressing this?

We understand that for many gig workers, timely pay and workplace safety are critical. That’s why FastGig ensures prompt, reliable payments—so our users don’t have to worry about chasing wages. We also provide workplace injury insurance, giving them peace of mind should anything happen on the job.

Beyond this, we have strict onboarding processes for employers. Every company is vetted for credibility, and in some cases, our team even tests the jobs personally to ensure they’re safe and suitable for our community of giggers.

Q: Is gig work still viewed as temporary in Singapore, or is it becoming a viable long-term career path?

Traditionally, gig work in Singapore was seen as something to do during school breaks or between jobs. But that perception is shifting. More people are choosing gig work as a serious, longer-term option—valuing the flexibility and control it offers over their schedules and earnings.

At FastGig, we don’t just connect workers to short-term jobs—we help them build up verified work histories. Over time, this opens doors to higher-paying gigs and even full-time roles. One inspiring example: a gig worker started with Decathlon through FastGig, performed exceptionally, and was offered a full-time role in 2023. Today, she’s a department manager, leading a team in one of their largest stores.
